Passive smoking is now firmly established as a significant cause of morbidity and mortality. It is estimated that adults who have never smoked who live with a smoker have a 30% greater risk of developing lung cancer and 24% greater risk of heart attack or death from coronary heart disease than those living with non smokers (NHMRC 1997). Children are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of passive smoking. Parental smoking causes lower respiratory infections, middle ear disease, asthma, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). It also exacerbates symptoms of asthma (Cook and Strachan, 1999; Wahlgren et al., 2000).

In the 2004 NSW Health Survey, respondents were asked to describe what the situation was regarding smoking in their home. 85.5% of Hunter New England respondents reported that their home was smoke free. 14.5% of Hunter New England homes continued to allow smoking inside.
