Hunter New England Population
Introduction

In this chapter

Introduction

The factors that affect the composition (eg sex, ethnicity) and age structure of a population include fertility, mortality and migration. Basic demographic information is vital to understanding patterns of good health and the absence of good health (usually measured in terms of disease, disability and death) as well as the factors that influence and determine these patterns. In addition, demographic information is necessary for the efficient planning of health and other social and physical infrastructure services required to maximise the health of people in a community. This chapter presents information on the age, sex and Indigenous status distribution of Hunter New England residents at the time of the Australian Bureau of Statistics 2001 census.
